Elderly drivers still qualify to renew licence, says minister

JOHOR BARU: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong is in awe of nonagenarian Yu Choo Nam who still actively travels despite his age.

The Ayer Hitam MP said that he met Yu, who was the Yong Peng Koo Tian Association president, during a Chinese New Year reception held in Yong Peng on Friday.

"Yu showed me his driving licence and asked if he is still qualified to renew it as it would expire on April 9 this year.

"I was surprised when I heard he (Yu) drove his own car from Kangkar Baru to Yong Peng to attend this reception.

"I commended Yu, who at the age of 95, is still actively driving from Yong Peng to Johor Baru and always visits his oil palm plantation in Lahad Datu Sabah," he said in a Facebook post today.

Dr Wee, who was also MCA president, said what was more amazing that Yu has had class B, D, E, F and H driving licences since 1956 as at a young age, Yu has been driving a tractor or heavy machinery.

He told Yu that based on the Road Transport Act 1987, as long as an elderly person is healthy and can see normally, he could continue to get or renew his driving licence.
