SEOUL: They're having a tough time taking on Audi, BMW and Mercedes in the oldschool combustion segment, but Genesis is now hoping for a respectable success on electric avenue.

Enter the GV60 from the sister brand of Hyundai and Kia.

Following the announcement of a G80 luxury sedan converted to battery drive, the Korean manufacturer is now planning their first vehicle designed specifically as an EV. A crossover for the upper middle class, the GV60 shares its battery platform with the Hyundai Ioniq5 and Kia EV6.

It wants to outdo the competition primarily with its 800-volt technology, and according to the manufacturer it enables short charging stops, in which you can get enough juice for 100km in little over 4 minutes.

Genesis says we can expect a market launch in the next eight months and has not yet given any details on prices. But with a view to the more down-to-earth sister models, prices well beyond US$60,000 are to be expected.

In return, similar to Hyundai and Kia, there will be up to two engines with possibly more than 544 hp on tap with batteries that should provide enough energy for more than 500km of range. However, Genesis will not reveal exact specifications until later.

But the Koreans are already allowing a glimpse into the interior of the five-seater and have shown us two slightly curved screens behind the steering wheel.

Part of the controls, dubbed Cristal Sphere, is reminiscent of a fortune teller's glass ball and is illuminated from the inside in such a way that it creates an ambient light even when the car is stationary, Genesis adds.
