Ferrari secures three Red Dot: Best of the Best Awards

MARANELLO: Ferrari has been honoured with the Red Dot: Best of the Best awards in the Product Design category for three models: the F80, the 12Cilindri and the 12Cilindri Spider.

Now in its 71st year, the German Red Dot Award recognises industrial design excellence and innovation; this year’s ceremony will take place on July 8 in Essen, Germany.

Over the past 11 years, Ferrari has accumulated a total of 32 Red Dot Awards, a record unmatched by any other car manufacturer since the award’s inception in 1955.

Since 2015, the jury has bestowed 13 Red Dot: Best of the Best distinctions on Ferrari entries. These accolades underline the work of the Ferrari Styling Centre, under the direction of Flavio Manzoni, which strives to produce cars that marry heritage-inspired aesthetics with cutting-edge functionality.

The Ferrari 12Cilindri and 12Cilindri Spider draw inspiration from Ferrari’s front-engine Grand Tourers of the 1950s and 1960s. Both two-seat models feature a V12 engine at the front and marry elegance, versatility and performance.

Their design language emphasises clean, harmonious lines alongside integrated active aerodynamics to optimise performance. A front-hinged clamshell bonnet showcases the engine bay, while classic cues—such as the twin pairs of exhaust pipes—pay homage to their forebears.

The Spider variant benefits from a retractable hardtop that deploys in fourteen seconds, even at speeds up to 45kph, allowing occupants to switch effortlessly between closed and open-air motoring.

The F80 represents Ferrari’s sixth supercar model. Its carbon-fibre monocoque houses a hybrid powertrain delivering a combined output of 1,183hp.

Nine hundred cv originate from a three-litre V6 engine (internal code F163CF) derived from the Le Mans-winning 499P prototype, achieving a specific output of 299hp per litre.

The remaining 299hp are produced by an 800 V hybrid system incorporating an electric front axle (e-4WD) and a rear MGU-K motor. Formula 1 technologies, including e-turbos (MGU-H), recover kinetic energy from the turbine rotation and eliminate turbo lag.

At 250kph, the F80 generates 1,050kg of downforce. A continuously adjustable active rear wing and an active suspension — whose upper arms are manufactured using 3D metal additive techniques — enhance aerodynamic balance and cornering precision.

A “Boost Optimisation” function records lap data and delivers targeted power surges to improve circuit performance.

Cockpit ergonomics feature an asymmetrical “1+” layout, prioritising driver comfort while retaining passenger accommodation. Production is capped at 799 units, running through to 2027, in celebration of Ferrari’s 80th anniversary.
