Ferrari's first-ever SUV is as fast as it is unaffordable

ROME: Ferrari, the home of low-lying status symbols, uncomfortable rear seats and red paint jobs, is now finally caving to the pressure and boarding the SUV bandwagon.

Wait, what? Ferrari, are you sure?

It's true, the Prancing Horse is giving rear passengers legroom at last. The makers of some of the flattest and flashiest sports cars in the world are now pumping things up to an off-road level with their first SUV, the Purosangue, planned for a mid-2023 launch.

It's set to be as environmentally unfriendly as it is fast and expensive, and this prancing workhorse offers performance worthy of a sports car, accelerating from 0 to 100kph in 3.3 seconds and offering a top speed beyond 310kph.

Fuel consumption is a thirsty 17.1 litres and CO2 emissions are put at a high 389 g/km. Ferrari is not mentioning plans of electrifying this two-ton off-roader.

For now, talk is instead of Ferrari firsts: Not only is it the first Ferrari in which you'll be able to sit comfortably in the rear, but it's also the first four-door Ferrari, as well as the first model with folding rear seats and an electric tailgate.

With a length of 4.97 metres, this SUV has a wheelbase of 3.03 metres and offers 473 litres of load space.

There are so-called suicide doors for rear passengers, meaning they are hinged on the rear side so that they open in the opposite direction to the front doors.

It might be the closest Ferrari yet to a family-friendly car, and yet it will remain unfriendly to the vast majority of families.

The SUV, which ranks above competitors such as the Lamborghini Urus or the Aston Martin DBX, costs at least €380,000 (RM1.8mil) in its home market of Europe.

Leather upholstery costs extra and Ferrari won't even install a navigation system if you offer money.

Living up to the car's Purosangue ("thoroughbred") name, propulsion comes from a V12 engine with 725 hp, which delivers a maximum torque of up to 716 Nm.
