BERLIN: With the new GT version of the Mustang Mach-E, Ford wants to inject some steroids into an electric car scene that is plagued by range anxiety.

The company's best electric sprinter certainly has plenty of muscle to flex, but it also comes at a price.

Costing almost €30,000 (RM145,000) more than the basic version in Europe, the latest Ford Mustang electric is priced at upwards of €72,900 (RM353,000).

For that extra price, however, you get a jacked-up crossover with more power than any of the company's other electric cars, as well as more than most with combustion engines.

According to Ford, the Mach-E GT is limited to 200kph, but it only needs 3.7 seconds to go from 0 to 100kph. This makes it even better than the conventional Mustang sports car.

This is made possible by an upgraded drive system, which uses one motor per axle with a combined 487hp.

The electric motors are powered by a lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 88kWh. This gives the Mustang a range of up to 500km in the WLTP cycle.

After that, it needs a recharge and according to the manufacturer, it can tap enough power for 99km in 10 minutes at 150kW.

In addition to the more powerful drive, there is a tighter-tuned chassis and another driving profile that is primarily intended for race tracks, where it slows down the electronic control systems, according to Ford.
