SHANGHAI: Some of Geely’s latest and best-selling cars were made available for the Malaysia media to get acquainted with during the sidelines of Auto Shanghai 2025.
Although the large car park which was designed as a test track wasn’t a proper course, it was good that we had a hands-on and personal experience with these vehicles.
Note that Geome (formerly Geometry) and Galaxy are sub-brands under Geely.
Geome Xingyuan
One of two new Geely cars that hold a bit more prominence than the others, the Xingyuan is a sub-compact electric hatchback that had its China debut late last year. It featured prominently at Auto Shanghai 2025 and for good reason.
It is Geely’s best-selling car, scoring a record-breaking 30,000 sales figure in March alone, and a total of 140,000 plus units sold since its launch sometime in September last year.

Xingyuan.
It’s not only Geely’s best-seller, it’s the best-selling car in all of China for the period of January to March this year.
With a range of 310km to 400km depending on the battery pack chosen (30.12kWh = 78hp/40.16kWh = 114hp), the Xingyuan has a top speed of a mere 135kph and is definitely targeted at a much younger generation of car buyers.

Xingyuan.
It has been suggested that this model may be “reborn” in Malaysia as the Proton eMAS 5.
Boasting an interior that far exceeds expectations, especially when taking into consideration the almost “entry-level” nature of the Xingyuan, this little compact urban-commuter returns the kind of driving experience that one would expect from a car in a much higher category.

Xingyuan.
An abundance of interior space thanks to a lack of a traditional ICE powertrain means that two adults can actually sit very comfortably in the rear, while the two up front are also cossetted by seats that would look at home in a car a segment or two higher.
It’s the same for NVH – noise, vibration, harshness – insofar as there’s very little or none of them when on the go.

Xingyuan.
The Xingyuan is very well put together and again offers the kind of NVH suppression that belies its pecking order in the realm of sub-compact entry-level EV cars.
Galaxy Xingjian 7
Also known as the Starship 7, this model was the second of the two cars at this get-to-know-your-Geely session that was of some significance, especially for the Malaysian market, seeing as how there are speculations that it may be arriving on our shores early next year.
Unlike the Xingyuan, this offering from Geely is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

Galaxy Xingjian 7.
Shoehorned under the bonnet is a NordThor EM-i 2.0 PHEV powertrain.
A 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine produces 111PS and 136Nm of torque, mated to a battery pack that comes with two options, 8.5kWh or 19kWh, giving the Xingjian 7 a cruising range of up to 1,420km when fully-fuelled and charged.

Galaxy Xingjian 7.
On the inside the Starship 7 is again almost bespoke in the way it presents itself, with the kind of opulence one would expect from an upmarket model.
With amazingly high levels of NVH suppression, it’s hard to even tell that there’s a traditional lump of ICE under the bonnet up front, and it’s only during very hard acceleration when that becomes slightly audibly evident.

Galaxy Xingjian 7.
Speaking of speed and power, the combined forces of the ICE and hybrid system bestow the Starship 7 with some very serious levels of acceleration, and all the while maintaining excellent composure and road manners.
Xingyue L
While the name literally means “stars and moon” the Xingyue L – also known as the Monjaro – features a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 175kW and 350Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed auto transmission.

Wrapped in a SUV type body configuration, this flagship model by Geely surpassed all expectations when it achieved an astounding sales figure of 718,000 plus units since its launch.
As it is a “China only” model, it is highly unlikely that we will be getting it, but it was nice to see the possibilities that the future may hold for possible successors to the X90 perhaps.
Galaxy Xingyao 8
Also known as the Starshine 8, the Xingyao 8 is a plug-in hybrid D-segment passenger sedan using Geely’s proprietary G-Pilot Intelligent Driving System using a roof mounted Lidar sensor for enhanced driver assistance.

Xingyao 8.
The PHEV drivetrain combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor with 2WD and 4WD variants available.
The Xingyao 8 can travel up to 130km in pure electric mode, and its launch is expected this month.

For all intents and purposes, it is highly unlikely that this model will ever make its way to Malaysian shores, seeing as how the D-segment sedan market is facing strong challenges from sports utility vehicles. – Chris Wee
