SHENZHEN, China: Gentari Sdn Bhd and BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deploy BYD Flash Charging technology in Malaysia, alongside battery energy storage systems (BESS).
BYD Flash Charging can deliver 400km of driving range in five minutes for compatible vehicles under optimal conditions.
Gentari is a clean energy solutions company wholly-owned by Petronas.
Under the MoU, the parties will work together to identify suitable charging locations for BYD Flash Charging infrastructure, including key intercity corridors connecting major population centres.
They will also assess supporting power infrastructure, battery energy storage requirements, technical and commercial considerations, project development opportunities, and potential operating models to enable future deployment at scale.

From left (standing): Also present were Gentari chief green mobility officer Fadzrul Ahmad, Petronas senior vice president, corporate strategy Marina Md Taib, BYD chairman and president Wang Chuanfu, and BYD vice president Liu Xueliang.
In addition to green mobility, the parties will also explore opportunities in renewable energy generation and energy storage, drawing on Gentari's clean energy expertise and BYD's capabilities in energy storage and technology innovation.
The partnership comes as Malaysia's EV (electric vehicle) market continues to expand rapidly, with 53,537 new EV registrations recorded in the first nine months of 2026, a 98.8% increase from the same period last year.
The government has a target of 30,000 public EV charging points nationwide by 2030.
To support this growth, Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia and provides access to about 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub.
"BYD’s leadership in EV, battery and high-power charging technology, combined with Gentari’s experience in developing and operating EV charging networks, gives us a strong foundation to strengthen Malaysia’s EV charging ecosystem and support wider adoption,” said Gentari group CEO Sushil Purohit.
“Malaysia is an important market for BYD, and we are pleased to bring BYD Flash Charging here as part of our continued efforts to support the country’s growing EV adoption,” said BYD vice president Liu Xueliang.
“We are very excited to see this collaboration come together. We want to give our customers the confidence to make the switch to electric and enjoy a truly seamless EV ownership experience,” said BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma.
