Getting a new motorcycle helmet: What to look for

By dpa | 3 May 2020

BERLIN: Even if your motorcycle helmet has never had to endure a hard impact and is still looking in tip-top shape, you should replace it after it's been around five to seven years, say product testers.

According to German test organisation GTUe, as the helmet's material ages, it can start to impair the helmet's structure so that it no longer can completely protect its wearer in case of an accident.

GTUe adds that how well a helmet fits and its safety should factor more heavily in a rider's buying decision than price or design.

If the helmet isn't too old and is still in good form, bikers can use special cleaning products without worrying about causing any damage.

In some cases, typical household cleaners can also work: a sponge with lukewarm, soapy water is enough to wipe off dead bugs and remove dirt. For the helmet's padding, a mild detergent works wonders.
