GMC upgrades Hummer EV with King Crab and Carbon Fibre Edition

DETROIT: GMC has enhanced its all-electric Hummer EV supertruck for 2026, introducing a software-enabled off-road rear-steer mode, dubbed King Crab, and a new limited-run Carbon Fibre Edition known for its accelerated performance.

The King Crab mode, delivered as an over-the-air update at no extra charge, builds on the vehicle’s existing four-wheel-steer system by turning the rear wheels more rapidly than the front.

This improves manoeuvrability in confined off-road conditions, aiding rock crawling and obstacle avoidance.

Available as standard across the 2X and 3X Pickup and SUV models, King Crab will also be issued to all owners of 2022–2025 Hummer EV Pickups and SUVs later this year.

Chief engineer Al Oppenheiser emphasised that the update fulfils an original promise to activate the “Mystery Mode” feature requested by early adopters, demonstrating GMC’s commitment to continuous software innovation.

All 2026 models will support future updates, ensuring additional features throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.

The Carbon Fibre Edition, limited in production and offered on 3X Pickup and SUV trims, leverages a 24-module battery pack to become the quickest Hummer EV yet.

Calibration and propulsion software optimisation enable the pickup to accelerate from standstill to 96kph in just 2.8 seconds.

The 3X Pickup variant delivers a combined 865kW/1,160hp and 17,626Nm of torque, making it the most powerful truck in its class.

Distinctive styling includes a matte Magnus Gray exterior, Velocity Ember interior theme, unique 22-inch carbon fibre wheels, all-terrain tyres, carbon fibre mirror and skid-plate inserts, black emblems and approach shield, and a black power tonneau cover on the Pickup (the SUV gains a 22-inch spare carbon fibre wheel).

Bidirectional charging capabilities have been added for both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home applications. Owners can transfer power to another compatible EV or supply electricity to a home during outages, provided the necessary equipment is fitted.

Safety and driver assistance receive upgrades via enhanced Super Cruise, the industry’s first hands-free system that now incorporates Hands-on Lane Change Assist, allowing seamless transitions between mapped and non-mapped roads.

A new Lane Change for Route feature can automatically shift lanes on Super Cruise-mapped highways when using the built-in navigation.

Ride quality benefits from refined damper tuning, while the cabin features a 34 cm diagonal premium GMC infotainment centre with split-screen customisation.

Google Built-In delivers entertainment and productivity apps during charging stops, and OnStar connectivity offers intelligent EV routing, voice assistance, and access to Chrome, GameSnacks and Prime Video.

For 2026, two fresh exterior colours — Coastal Dune and Auburn Matte — join the palette, alongside new interior themes Granite Drift and Stealth Eclipse.

Production begins later this year at GM’s Factory Zero Assembly Centre here and in Hamtramck, Michigan, with dealer availability and pricing to be announced closer to launch.
