KUALA LUMPUR: At the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2026, GWM Malaysia is showcasing three models that represent the current progress and future direction of its locally assembled portfolio.
Leading the showcase is the GWM Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV (plug-in hybrid), GWM’s locally assembled luxury MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) that is also exported from Malaysia to Thailand.
In Malaysia, the Wey G9 is also the top-selling luxury MPV among officially distributed OEM (original equipment manufacturer) brands.
Joining the showcase are the GWM Ora 5 HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) and GWM Haval H7 Hi4 PHEV, both planned for local assembly in Malaysia.
The Ora 5 HEV combines distinctive design and intelligent technology with hybrid efficiency, while the Haval H7 Hi4 PHEV brings performance, intelligent four-wheel-drive capability and electrified efficiency to GWM’s SUV (sport utility vehicle) portfolio.
Organised by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), GATE 2026 brings together government, automotive manufacturers, technology providers, suppliers and industry stakeholders to exchange ideas, showcase technological advancements and explore opportunities for collaboration across Malaysia’s automotive, technology and manufacturing ecosystem.
Since establishing its presence in Malaysia in 2022, GWM has continued to strengthen its local operations through product investments, technology introductions and localisation initiatives.
In the first half of 2026, the company delivered 3,166 vehicles, representing a 42.4% year-on-year increase and positioning GWM among Malaysia’s top 11 automotive brands, supported by key models including the GWM Haval H6 HEV and GWM Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV.
GWM Malaysia managing director (commercial operations) Stan Li Hao said, "As we enter our next phase of growth, Malaysia is becoming increasingly important not only as a market, but also as part of our wider ASEAN strategy.
“Through local assembly, regional opportunities and stronger partnerships, our focus is on creating sustainable, long-term growth while contributing to the development of Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem.”
GWM Malaysia chief operating officer Roslan Abdullah said, “GATE is an important platform for the industry to exchange ideas, showcase capabilities and explore opportunities for collaboration. For GWM, our presence reflects both the progress we are making in Malaysia today and the possibilities we are exploring for tomorrow.
“With our current CKD model, two upcoming models planned for local assembly, and Malaysia serving as an export base for the Wey G9 to Thailand, we are strengthening our commitment to the local automotive and supplier ecosystem ”
GWM is showcasing its proprietary Hi2 and Hi4 technologies, demonstrating its approach to balancing efficiency, performance, intelligence and capability across different driving requirements.
GWM is also highlighting hydrogen technologies developed by FTXT.
The technology showcase aims to encourage greater industry awareness and dialogue around how hydrogen and other emerging new-energy technologies could contribute to Malaysia’s longer-term mobility ambitions.
