Hail Toyota Hilux

By RIZAL JOHAN | 6 October 2016

The new Toyota Hilux, now in its eighth generation, has taken a big leap from the previous model which was launched in Malaysia 10 years ago. And rightly so. The pickup segment has become increasingly crowded as almost all automakers have it on offer.

The new Hilux comes in no less than six variants - you can choose between the new 2.8 and 2.4-litre diesel engines; single or double cab; auto and manual transmissions and even 4x4 or 2x4.

We spent a weekend with the top-of-the-range 2.8G which came with modern-day conveniences such as push start button, upper glove box with cooler, LED projector headlights with auto levelling, as well as the optional 2-Din Head unit DVD Player with 7in touch screen, Smartphone Connectivity, Internet Browser, Voice recognition, Bluetooth, HDMI and USB ports, navigation and reverse camera with guide lines.

The standard audio system consists of the 2-DIN Head Unit DVD Player with a 6.1in touch screen, tuner, MP3, AUX-Jack, USB, SD card and Bluetooth.

The new diesel Intercooler VNT 2.8litre engine produces 177PS at 3,400rpm and 450Nm of torque between 1,600rpm and 2,400rpm and is mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission. Also new is the chassis which is more rigid and robust thanks to the use of high tensile steel plates and thick steel plates under the vehicle to protect the engine, transmission and fuel tank.

The new Hilux also has undergone changes in the looks department with a bolder front-fascia featuring the pronounced front bumper and split grille - the upper grille remains slender with chrome slats and flow seamlessly into the headlamps and daytime running lights (DRL).

Inside, the cabin has been refined with an entirely new dashboard and an emphasis on user-friendliness and comfort. The 2.8G is decked in leather upholstery including leather wrapping for the steering wheel and gear knob as well as 8-way powered seat for the driver.

There is also the Optitron meters with cool blue illumination on the instrument panel which was originally developed for Lexus luxury models and an upper glovebox with a cooling function.

The new 2.8G Hilux offers an easy and enjoyable drive what with the new engine which is smooth and powerful and all the creature comforts usually found in passenger cars. Likewise, the suspension and handling offers very good ride comfort while the insulation in the cabin keeps noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels to a minimum.

The pickup is no longer just a workhorse these days but one that balances functionality, good looks and extensive features to suit the needs of the modern consumer.

The Hilux already has a reputation of reliability and robustness and that tradition continues with the new generation Hilux.
