Have a safe journey: Packing tips for motorcycle trips

BERLIN: If you are vacationing by motorcycle, you need to make sure your baggage is packed properly before setting off. Space on the machine is very limited so it's vital that the most necessary things are stowed as efficiently as possible.

The Institute for Two-Wheeler Safety (ifz) in Germany offers a few tips.

Bear in mind that loading makes the machine heavier and its centre of gravity can move further up and back, both of which change the motorcycle's usual handling characteristics.

To reduce the negative consequences for driving dynamics, heavy things are best placed as low on the bike as possible. The higher up and further back things are loaded, for example in a top case or on the luggage rack at the rear, the lighter they should be.

Ideally, the weight should be distributed symmetrically, that is evenly between the left and right sides, for example in pannier bags.

Anything that can't be stowed in panniers or a tank bag should be carefully lashed down with straps so that it can't slip or fall off.

When securing something, make sure that there are no overhanging strap ends that could get caught in the rear wheel or the chain.

It's advisable to check the luggage regularly at every stop to ensure that everything is still properly secured. A strap that was tight at the beginning of the journey can loosen after time on the road.

It's also important not to exceed the total weight permitted for the machine. The chassis should be adjusted according to the additional load. Pay attention to the maximum speeds that manufacturers of luggage systems specify.

A test ride before the trip will show whether everything is properly and safely stowed. This allows bikers to familiarise themselves with the changed riding behaviour and ensure that riding comfort, freedom of movement, and visibility are not restricted.

It's also advisable to take it easy on a tour with baggage and perhaps even a passenger and not push the speed too far.
