PETALING JAYA: A senior citizen accidentally drove his car into a CIMB bank in Damansara Uptown, Sunday evening, after mistaking the forward gear for reverse.
However, CIMB took the accident with some light-hearted jest, with group chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Razak posting a picture of the crashed car on his Instagram account with the caption:
“Err.... Sorry but we have not launched CIMB Drive-in service.”
The bank now has to close a portion of its ATM section, after the 70-year-old’s Perodua Kelisa ploughed through the glass panels before hitting a wall in the bank.
Petaling Jaya traffic police chief Deputy Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said the incident occurred when the retired army officer had just finished making a transaction at the bank here at about 7.30pm and went to pick up his car in front of the premises.
“As he was about to drive out, he didn’t realise that he had put the car into drive, and thought he was pressing the brake when he had actually hit the accelerator,” DSP Mohamad Roy said.
The mistake sent the car zooming up the sidewalk and through the glass panels. The car came to a stop after hitting a wall at the back of the bank. Fortunately, no one was in the bank at the time and the retiree escaped without injury.
“There was no damage to the ATMs,” said DSP Mohamad Roy. “He only hit a wooden booth that was next to the glass panels.
“The bank management lodged a report and we have decided to just issue a summons against the man,” he said. “It was a sincere mistake.”
