The 5-door version of the 10th-generation Civic sedan, featuring a 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO engine, will be launched in Indonesia in the first half of 2017. This is the first time the hatchback prototype is being announced for Asia and Oceania. The Civic sedan was launched in Indonesia in April and is imported from Honda Thailand. The hatchback with a CVT is expected to be assembled in Indonesia.

You may recall the 1.5L VTEC Turbo engine (with Honda Earth Dreams technology) produces peak output of 171hp at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 220Nm at 5,500rpm.

It made its world premiere at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Touted as the sportiest Civic, the sleek prototype hatchback is 30mm wider, 20mm lower and 130mm longer than the previous generation model. It comes with bigger wheels and tyres to project a sportier image. Honda said the cabin remain spacious and comfortable despite a truncated back.

The front has a short overhang with larger air intakes for an aggressive look complemented by LED headlights and fog lights as well as bumper and wheel arch accents. The rear maintains the familiar C-shaped LED rear lights as in the sedan version.

The 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO Civic sedan is priced at Rp 475 million (RM146,000) while the hatchback will be cheaper and expected to be not more than Rp 400 million (RM123,000).

Indonesians were exposed to the Civic hatchback 20 years ago. The fifth-generation Civic Estilo had a 1.6l SOHC engine with an output of 120hp.

Other Honda cars on display were the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell and special edition treatments for the Jazz, HR-V, Mobilio and Brio. Honda Indonesia also launched the Civic Turbo Prestige at the auto show, which comes with sporty spoiler upgrades. It is priced at around Rp 478 million (RM147,000), adding variety to the Civic sedan line-up which previously was only the Civic Turbo 1.5.

The show runs from Aug 11-21.
