Honda Malaysia rolls out new City hatchback

MELAKA: Honda Malaysia has officially rolled out the new City hatchback from its Melaka manufacturing plant, marking another step in the development of its local vehicle production capabilities and supplier ecosystem.

The production rollout was witnessed by Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Shikata Noriyuki and highlights Honda Malaysia’s continued investment in local manufacturing since production began in 2003.

More importantly for Malaysia’s automotive industry, production of the latest City Hatchback is supported by an established ecosystem involving about 500 local suppliers.

Honda Malaysia said its close partnerships with local suppliers have helped strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Shikata highlighted this localisation effort, noting that Honda Malaysia brings together Japanese technology, manufacturing know-how and quality standards with Malaysian talent, local suppliers and industrial capabilities.

The development is significant as modern vehicle production increasingly requires suppliers to support more sophisticated components, technologies and manufacturing processes.

For Honda Malaysia, maintaining a comprehensive local production operation provides an avenue for its supplier network to continue developing alongside its vehicle lineup.

Honda Malaysia managing director and CEO Narushi Yazaki said the company remained committed to strengthening its local manufacturing capabilities while supporting the Malaysian automotive industry.

The Melaka plant has consequently become an important part of Honda Malaysia’s operations, while its wider manufacturing ecosystem now involves nearly 20,000 associates across the company, supplier partners and dealership network.

The 2026 City hatchback also remains an important model for Honda Malaysia.

Introduced locally in 2021, the hatchback has recorded cumulative sales of over 51,000 units.

The latest version follows the recent introduction of the new City sedan, with refreshed styling, enhanced connectivity and a comprehensive range of technologies.

Honda is also retaining the City hatchback’s signature Ultra seats, which provide multiple configurations to enhance interior versatility and practicality.

While the new model brings updates to customers, its production provides another opportunity to strengthen the capabilities of the companies and people involved in building Honda vehicles locally.

This is crucial for Malaysia’s automotive industry as new vehicles use more advanced technologies.

A capable local supplier base will be important as manufacturers introduce newer powertrains, electronics, connectivity and other technologies into locally produced vehicles.

For Honda Malaysia, the New City Hatchback is therefore more than another addition to its product lineup.

It is another locally produced model supporting an established manufacturing and supplier ecosystem that has been built up over more than two decades.
