Hot at the wheel? Why driving without your shirt on isn't a good idea

BERLIN: Stuck in traffic without AC? In that case, you might be tempted to remove a layer or two.

However, driving topless or just in your underwear isn't the greatest idea.

After all, if you need to brake in an emergency, the seatbelt may cut into your skin which could hurt.

According to Dekra, a German vehicle testing organisation, that can cause painful burns, which could be avoided or reduced if you keep your shirt on.

Seatbelts should be worn so they fit close to your body to provide optimal protection in an accident and that also applies on hot days.

A better option to feel comfortable while driving on hot days: Air your car thoroughly before you set off, by opening all the doors including the boot for a minute.

If your vehicle has an air conditioning system, set the ventilation to recirculation to cool you as quickly as possible.

Initially, set it to maximum cooling capacity. Later, you can adjust the temperature to suit you best.

Directing the cold airflow towards particular parts of your body is not such a good idea as it increases your risk of catching a cold.

Don't go too low and don't wear flip flops

However, you don't want to get heat shock when you get out of the car, so don't cool down your car's interior too much.

German motoring organisation ADAC recommends a comfortable 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.

If you're susceptible to temperature changes, try sitting in the car with the door open for a few minutes before getting out, to slowly adjust to the higher temperature outside.

Another no-go: Wearing flip flops while driving or being barefoot at the wheel. Dekra says your feet can slip off the pedals more easily than if you wear shoes with a firm sole.

Your insurance company might also object if you have an accident, so if you are driving for work, it's best to always wear proper footwear.
