Hundred trees to be planted for every one cut in KL, says PM

PETALING JAYA: A hundred trees must be planted for every one cut in Kuala Lumpur, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today, he said the Kuala Lumpur mayor was instructed to follow the new requirement.

This comes after Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said certified arborists had identified 28 trees in the city as high risk, and these would be felled soon.

It also said that the authority had been conducting inspections on trees aged over 30 years or those with a circumference exceeding 1.5 metres around Kuala Lumpur since 2019.

"So far, a total of 175 trees have been identified as high risk, with most exceeding 50 years old. Out of this number, 147 trees have been felled.

"Our latest tree inspection in February has identified 28 high-risk trees in the city, and they will be felled soon," it said in a statement on May 10.

City Hall's statement came after storms uprooted several trees in the city, the latest of which happened in Jalan Pinang on Monday.

On May 7, a huge tree toppled on Jalan Sultan Ismail during a storm, killing one person and injuring two others.
