Is an Audi pickup truck too farfetched? Maybe not
By CARSIFU | 21 March 2022
INGOLSTADT: Audi CEO Markus Duesmann says the company is considering making a pick-up truck.
He said this in response to a question from Autocar recently.
"I can't promise that we will do one, but we are looking into it."
Duesmann suggested that Audi would present a vehicle of this bodystyle in the not-too-distant future, which could be taken to mean a concept truck is waiting in the wings.
If an Audi truck does eventually show up, it could be eyeing the US market, which is big on trucks.
It could be based on the VW Amarok featuring the use of a turbodiesel V6 or other combustion engine options.
But Audi has to tread carefully. Luxury brands and trucks seldom hit it off. Audi will have to take lessons from the Mercedes-Benz debacle with the X-Class, which was based on the Nissan Navara bones. The X-Class was axed in 2020 after less than three years on sale.
However, with parent VW AG going full throttle on electrification, Audi might actually be thinking of a fully electric truck ala Rivian R1T or the Ford F-150 Lightning. But with more European poshness baked in.
