Jaecoo J5 EV previewed ahead of upcoming launch

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have now had their first chance to see the all-new Jaecoo J5 EV in person, with the electric SUV making its public debut at the Oh My Meow! Expo 2026 ahead of its official launch.

While the official launch timeline has yet to be announced, the compact SUV's public appearance suggests a launch to happen in a month or two.

Instead of unveiling the J5 EV at a conventional motor show, Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia has chosen a pet-themed lifestyle event, reflecting one of the model's key themes as a family- and pet-friendly SUV.

Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia head Chris Tan said the J5 EV marks an important milestone in the brand's local electrification journey, combining smarter and more sustainable mobility with the comfort, versatility and adventurous character associated with the Jaecoo brand.

Aimed at young families, urban dwellers and pet owners, the J5 EV is powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing 155kW and 288Nm of torque.

Energy is supplied by a 58.9kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which delivers a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 402km.

The battery supports DC fast charging, allowing the state of charge to increase from 30% to 80% in 28 minutes.

The SUV also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, enabling external electrical devices to be powered directly from the vehicle.

Technology features include an Active Grille Shutter to improve aerodynamic efficiency, a Level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance System with 19 safety functions, a 540-degree HD surround-view camera and a 13.2-inch 2K central infotainment touchscreen.

Inside, the J5 EV features a 1.45sq m panoramic glass roof, double-glazed front side windows, rear multi-link suspension and dual-zone automatic climate control, with the double-glazed windows and rear suspension helping to enhance ride comfort and cabin refinement.

Practicality is also emphasised, with a 35-litre front trunk, a 480-litre rear luggage compartment and 35 storage spaces distributed throughout the cabin.

Reinforcing its pet-friendly positioning, the J5 EV features low-VOC leatherette upholstery with antibacterial and scratch-resistant properties.

It also comes with a Pet Mode that keeps the cabin at a comfortable temperature while owners are away from the vehicle.

The J5 EV will be on display throughout the Oh My Meow! Expo 2026, which runs from July 9 to 12 at the Mid-Valley Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur, where visitors can view the SUV alongside a range of pet-friendly activities.

Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia has yet to announce local pricing or a launch date, with more details expected closer to the J5 EV's Malaysian debut.
