Jaecoo J5 launched: RM108K, B-segment SUV, 1.5L turbo, CVT, 145hp/210Nm

KUALA LUMPUR: Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia has officially launched the J5 - a B-segment sports utility vehicle (SUV) that expands Jaecoo's current model lineup, which includes the J7, J7 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and the larger J8.

Dubbed as an Urban Explorer, the J5 is priced on-the-road without insurance at RM108,000, and is accompanied by a seven-year or 150,000km warranty.

Colour choices include Zircon Grey, Snowy White, Glacier Blue and Canyon Black.

From now until March 15, early adopters will receive a Duit Raya rebate of RM3,000.

A complimentary first-year insurance is also provided, or buyers can opt to receive an additional Duit Raya rebate of RM3,000.

A J5 car accessories trio package (valued at RM2,000) is also included and comprises a subwoofer, wireless karaoke microphone, and a multi-functional flashlight.

With the early-bird rebates, the price drops to RM102,000.

With a 2,620mm wheelbase (the longest in its segment), the J5 has a length of 4,380mm, a width of 1,860mm and stands 1,650mm in height - allowing for a 480-litre boot (1,284 litres) to be realised.

To power the front wheels, the J5 uses a 1.5-litre (1,498cc) turbocharged SQRE4T15C engine producing 145hp and 210Nm of torque.

At 1,613kg (kerb), the engine is managed by a continuously variable transmission (CVT), allowing it to sip from a 51-litre fuel tank to deliver 7.5 litres per 100km and the ability to sprint from 0 to 100kph in 7.5 seconds.

There are also three driving modes of Eco, Normal and Sport modes, which come with a memory function, rather than allowing the vehicle to revert back to its usual Standard mode.

Up front, the suspension uses MacPherson struts, while the rear employs a multi-link suspension - all hidden by its 18-inch alloys fitted with 235/55 series tyres.

For illumination, LEDs are used for the front automatic headlights with integrated turn signals and rear light clusters.

Inside, the ventilated and power-adjustable seats are upholstered in leatherette, while a 13.2-inch 2K infotainment touchscreen system for the eight-speaker sound system that comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and karaoke function takes centre stage.

The driver gets an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster while passengers get to enjoy the dual-zone automatic climate controls, second-row air vent, and a touchscreen climate control panel.

The cabin is said to be pet-friendly, with anti-bacterial and scratch-resistant materials used as well as other notable inclusions such as power windows with one-touch and anti-pinch functionality, noise-reducing front side windows and a panoramic moonroof.

Synthetic leather door trim panels are also used, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel (tilt and telescopic), front centre armrest with ventilation, USB ports (Type A and C), 50W wireless charger, second-row USB ports, cargo area 12V power outlet, powered tailgate, tonneau cover, and a two-tier cargo floorboard.

For safety, there are six airbags, and anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, and vehicle stability control.

There are also a tyre pressure monitoring system, a 540-degree high-definition surround view camera system, brake override system, traction control system, emergency brake assist, roll stability control, hill-start assist, hill descent control, auto lock/unlock, speed limit warning, and speed limiter (configurable).

Also, there are Level 2.5 advanced driver aid systems (ADAS), which include Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Front Vehicle Departure Alert (DAI), Integrated Cruise Assist (ICA), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Rear Cross-Traffic Braking (RCTB).

There's also Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), Evasive Steering Assist (ESA), Door Opening Warning (DOW), Active Speed Limiter (ASL), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Multi-Collision Braking (MCB), and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELK).

Officiating the launch of the J5 was Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Deputy Minister Sim Tze Tzin, who said that the J5 is a testament to the growing confidence of global players in Malaysia's industrial ecosystem.

"MITI is accelerating efforts to transform Malaysia's automotive industry into a hub for higher-value manufacturing, electric vehicles, and export-led growth under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030," explained Sim.

"Broadening our model lineup to reach a new segment of drivers - individuals and families seeking versatility, comfort and sophistication, the Jaecoo J5 delivers freedom for everyday urban life and weekend adventures, without leaving your world behind," concluded Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia head Chris Tan.
