TOKYO: Mazda has unveiled a compact sports car concept, the Mazda Iconic SP, at the Japan Mobility Show.

The concept car combines a dual rotary powertrain with an EV platform, similar to the recently launched MX-30 R-EV.

The Iconic SP is designed to adapt to a new era and demonstrates the company's commitment to creating products that satisfy customers' love of driving and cars.

The Iconic SP measures 4,180mm long, 1,850mm wide, 1,150mm tall, and has a 2,590mm wheelbase. It weighs 1,450 kg and has a maximum output of 1,450 PS.

It achieves a low centre of gravity for driving performance, with a unique design made possible by mounting the lightweight and compact rotary engine in the centre of the car.

The two-rotor rotary EV system offers a highly scalable engine with a flexible layout and the ability to burn a variety of fuels, including hydrogen.

This technology is ideal for sports car packages and can drive in a virtually carbon-neutral state if the battery is charged with electricity derived from renewable energy.

Mazda president and CEO Masahiro Moro expressed the company's determination to keep the joy of driving alive in the age of electrification. He described the Iconic SP as a dream solution with its dual rotary power generator EV powertrain.

In addition to the Iconic SP, Mazda also showcased its new MX-5. The latest MX-5 features upgrades such as new LED headlights and rear lights, as well as interior changes.

The stand also includes a first-generation MX-5, symbolising Mazda's commitment to the joy of driving, a two-thirds scale model MX-5 for children to experience simulated driving, and an MX-5 that can be controlled using only the driver's hands.
