JPJ to replace Awas cameras in phases

PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is replacing the "Automated Awareness Safety System" (Awas) cameras in stages at the gazetted locations, said its director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli.
JPJ director-general said in a statement today that it was switching to new cameras that use the "Automated Number Plate Recognition" (ANPR) technology.
The decision to switch to a new set of surveillance cameras was also partly because the existing Redflex cameras used in Awas were damaged and the principal no longer provided technical support, said JPJ as reported by Bernama.
An ANPR system monitors and tracks vehicle plates by automatically recognising characters.
A high-resolution camera captures vehicle images and it works with a combination of hardware and software to detect and extract licence plate information, which is then compared against a vehicle database for quick identification and verification.
