JPJ to study system, streamline the transition of B1, B2 licences to B

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is detailing what class B1 and B2 motorcycle licence holders must do to obtain a class B license (for high-powered motorcycles).

JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said his department is looking into the matter before it is announced soon.

He said the special transition programme, which would begin on Oct 1, is not automatically offered. To upgrade their license, license holders must undergo two hours of training before taking the practical test at a driving institute.

"Participation for the programme must hold a class B1 or B2 for more than 10 years with no summonses or JPJ offences (blacklisted).

"There is still a practical test which means they have to ride motorcycles over 500cc for evaluation and approval by JPJ officials to determine whether they (riders) are eligible or not," he said in an interview at Wisma Bernama here on Tuesday.

Aedy Fadly said that candidates participating in the programme would be charged RM160.

He added that previously obtaining a B class motorcycle licenser required two hours of theory class, 9.5 hours of circuit training, and a fee of RM900.

On Aug 2, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that, starting Oct 1, driving institutes would no longer offer programmes to obtain Class B1 motorcycle licenses for the public.
