Kia Carens MPV morphs into SUV-like creature

SEOUL: The latest Kia Carens made its world premiere in India today.

It's now called a recreational vehicle (RV) instead of an MPV.

The fourth-generation Carens is touted as a comfortable and spacious three-row seater with the longest wheelbase in its class.

The car comes with a first in India Hi-Secure Safety Package as standard across all trims, which includes six airbags, making it one of the safest vehicles in the country.

The Carens is also a connected car that comes with many class-leading features, setting new benchmarks in the industry.

The Carens uses the same engines as the India-made Seltos. It offers a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine with 115hp and 144Nm of torque, hooked to a six-speed manual.

There's another variant with a more powerful turbocharged 1.4-litre unit making 140hp and 242Nm; it's mated with the manual or a seven-speed, dual-clutch auto as an option.

Kia has also added a diesel version with a 1.5-litre engine producing 115hp and 250Nm. It's paired with a six-speed torque-converter automatic.

"With its bold design, high-tech features, and industry-leading safety systems, the Kia Carens is set to create a completely new segment and industry benchmark for family vehicles," said Ho Sung Song, president and CEO at Kia Corporation.

The Carens will be available in India as well as selected markets starting from the first quarter of 2022.
