KL motorists fear falling objects from expressway works

PETALING JAYA: The construction of Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) on both sides of Jalan 1/144a, Taman Bukit Cheras in Kuala Lumpur, is worrying motorists.

Those who use the road to exit to the Cheras-Kajang Expressway (CKE) are afraid for their safety.

Taman Bukit Cheras resident SK Ong, 67, said he was worried that construction materials could come crashing down.

“Whenever I drive along the main road, I pray that nothing falls on me, ” he said.

The fear of passing through an ongoing highway construction was amplified after a parapet wall slab from the SUKE construction at the Middle Ring Road 2 fell and hit a car on Sept 19.

“Initially, there was a notice that a partial closure of Jalan 1/144a would be implemented from Sept 17 to Oct 13 to facilitate the construction.

“However, the closure was not implemented. Closing the road would inconvenience residents as it is one of the main roads to exit to the CKE.

“The best way is to have an alternative road to exit the neighbourhood, ” he said.

Ong suggested an access road via the Police Forensic Laboratory and Royal Malaysian Police College Kuala Lumpur as an alternative for motorists to get to CKE instead of Jalan 1/144a.

Another Taman Bukit Cheras resident Mohamad Nisham Abdullah, 35, said the road was always jammed.

“Traffic is chaotic as there is no proper signage, ” he said, adding that he had seen workers directing traffic at the site.

Highway concessionaire Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) spokesperson said the “stop and go” traffic management system was implemented as a safety precaution whenever the crane boom was utilised.

“This will happen from time to time throughout the project period.

“The contractor will ensure that there is no traffic from either direction at that time, ” he said.

In a related development, a car was damaged when cement from a construction site at Jalan Bandaran, Kuala Lumpur, fell on several passing cars.

"On Wednesday (Dec 9) at around 1.30pm, cement from an elevated highway bridge still under construction fell," said Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement department chief Asst Comm Zulkefly Yahya.

"One of the two lanes there was still open to traffic, ” he said today.

He said cement fell on two cars that were on the open road.

ACP Zulkefly also said that the driver of the damaged car has yet to lodge a police report about the incident.

"Damage to the vehicle was reported but there were no injuries," he added.
