KL traffic volume surges to 30% today after lull

KUALA LUMPUR: The volume of traffic here shot up by nearly 30% on the first day of the implementation of the conditional movement control order (MCO) compared to the day before, says Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement head ACP Zulkefly Yahya.

He said the enforcement of the conditional MCO also saw all Op Covid-19 roadblocks at eight locations removed.

"We had received instructions from the Kuala Lumpur police chief to end the roadblocks in the federal capital, as well as road closures, ” he said.

He said the police would now focus on traffic enforcement against drunk drivers, and road bullies.

"Apart from that, we will also assist in monitoring public places and car parks.”

A survey by Bernama found many vehicles heading into the city, but the traffic situation was under control.

Checks at several LRT stations found public transport users following the latest guidelines.

Penang also saw more traffic on its roads today although many businesses have yet to start operating. There were also fewer roadblocks in the state.

However, roadblocks at Penang's borders are still being manned along with several others from Balik Pulau to George Town as well as the trunk road from Nibong Tebal at the Penang-Perak and Kamunting toll plaza in Perak.

Last Friday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the conditional MCO would be carried out from today, where almost all economic sectors and businesses would be allowed to reopen, subject to strict conditions. However, nine states have decided not to relax the restrictions.
