Let a turbo engine cool down gradually after a hard drive

BERLIN: Turbocharged car engines need a cooling down period after a hard drive on the motorway and should not be switched off suddenly, say experts.

After a high-speed run, a driver should continue at medium or low speed for a few kilometres before pulling into car park or motorway service station and shutting down the engine.

Exhaust gas temperatures can reach 1,000 degrees Celsius and the short break allows the turbocharger to spin down to idle speed and oil to circulate through the bearings before the motor stops.

Failing to do so could lead to overheating and turbocharger rotor or housing damage, Germany's Tuv inspection agency says.
