BERLIN: Lexus is freshening up its luxury saloon ES, and the Japanese rival to the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes E-Class has been given a facelift both on the inside and out before it hits international markets in the coming weeks.

The car had its world premiere at Auto Shanghai in April.

On the outside, you'll spot the difference mainly in the fresh face up front where there's a new radiator grille and an updated design for the headlights, while the rear lights are also new, Lexus has announced.

The biggest change, however, is in the interior. Finally catching up with the competition years later, the Japanese manufacturer has now also installed a touchscreen. At the same time, the designers have moved the screen closer to the driver to make it easier to operate.

Nothing has changed in the safety package with its 10 airbags and numerous assistants as well as the digital wing mirrors, which, it must be said, are unrivalled in this class.

Under the bonnet, too, everything remains the same: The new ES continues to run with the familiar combination of a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor.

In the ES 300h, this twin pack has a system output of 218hp and reaches a top speed of 180kph.

Consumption is said to be 5.2 litres and CO2 emissions 119 grams per kilometre.
