TOKYO: Lexus announced today that it has sold 2 million electrified cars globally.

The milestone was reached at the end of April 2021.

It launched its first hybrid car - the RX400h SUV - in 2005. Today , it sells nine models of electrified vehicles, including hybrids (non-plug-ins) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), in 90 countries and regions around the world.

In 2020, 33% of the Lexus models sold globally were electrified.

Under the "Lexus Electrified" vision announced in 2019, Lexus plans to evolve its electrification technology to roll out better cars.

By 2025, Lexus will introduce 20 new or improved models, including more than 10 BEVs, plug-in hybrids, and HEVs. That year is also the target for the brand to offer electrified vehicle options across the entire Lexus product range.

In addition, by 2050, Lexus will achieve carbon neutrality throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle such as materials, parts, and vehicle manufacturing along with logistics, driving, and disposal/recycling.

In order to further accelerate the spread of electric vehicles, Lexus plans to introduce its first plug-in in 2021, and a completely new BEV in 2022.

The new models would exploit advances in motors, inverters and batteries.

Future Lexus electrified models would feature DIRECT4 and steer-by-wire systems. DIRECT4 is a four-wheel-drive torque distribution technology that combines drive force control with responsive steer-by-wire systems that greatly enhance vehicle reflexes.
