PETALING JAYA: More than 10 million vehicles plied major highways on Friday and Saturday as people took advantage of the long weekend and school holidays.

Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department principal assistant director (enforcement) Supt Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said some 5.3 million vehicles were recorded on the highways on Friday.

He said Saturday saw 5.6 million vehicles on major highways and at 2pm today, heavy traffic was reported along the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung as well as in Johor while the same situation was observed along the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway.

"The heavy traffic can be attributed to those taking advantage of the long weekend and the school holidays to travel," he said, urging motorists to be patient, courteous and to refrain from provoking others especially when they were stuck in heavy traffic.

"We have noticed that as the traffic becomes congested, a number of motorists start resorting to driving on the emergency lane.

"Our personnel are out in the field to ensure traffic flows smoothly and motorists abide by the regulations.

"They will not hesitate to take action against anyone caught intentionally violating the traffic rules," he said.

Supt Bakri also told motorists with dashboard cameras to forward footage of errant motorists to the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Facebook page so further action could be taken against traffic violators.
