Malaysia-Thai border likely to get VEP system

PUTRAJAYA: The government intends to expand the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) and Road Charge (RC) system at the Malaysia-Thailand border, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said the new system, which will be handled by a private company, would encompass eight border crossing gates between Malaysia and Thailand.

He said the government would not allocate any funding for the planned system, where development and operational costs would be borne entirely by the chosen private company.

“To evaluate the project’s feasibility and push for more competitive implementation methods, the government will not be providing any sort of funding for the system.

“As such, interested parties are advised to propose business ideas that will be evaluated by us,” he said during a press conference at the Transport Ministry office here today.

The VEP is a permit issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), which enables the entry of foreign vehicles into Malaysia.

Loke said that a briefing session between the ministry and interested parties will be held on June 24, adding that proposals can be submitted from July 1 to Sept 1.

“Whichever private entity is then deemed the most qualified with a competitive proposal will then receive approval.

“They will then be given the authority by the Transport Ministry to carry out the registration of VEP and collection of RC on behalf of JPJ for a preset period,” he said.
