Mazda axing CX-3 and Mazda6 in US for 2022 model year

LOS ANGELES: Mazda says it will discontinue the sale of the Mazda6 sedan and CX-3 SUV in the United States for the 2022 model year.

They are being axed due to poor demand for them. In the US and globally, SUVs have become popular. In the case of the CX-3, it is being overshadowed by the better-looking, more powerful, and slightly larger CX-30 SUV.

Last year, the CX-30 outsold the CX-3 4 to 1 despite being priced higher.

As for the Mazda6, the similarly priced CX-5 outsold it 9 to 1 last year.

However, it doesn't mean the Mazda6 will be gone forever Stateside.

According to some sources, the Mazda6 is taking a break - at least for one year - and is being redrafted as a more premium car that is aiming to compete with the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. That would mean having an inline 6-cylinder engine as well as rear-wheel drive to provide a similar but alternative driving performance as the Germans.

The exit of the CX-3 could pave the way for the CX-30 to be renamed as CX-3 to streamline Mazda's naming nomenclature.
