STUTTGART: Mercedes-AMG is teasing the GT Concept ahead of its reveal at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
The concept is a four-door sports car that is envisioned as a rival to the Porsche Panamera.
Like the two-door GT coupe, the concept car has similar proportions but is stretched to accommodate four doors and more space for passengers. It is based on Mercedes’ modified modular rear-wheel drive platform.
Should Mercedes-Benz sign off the rear-wheel drive car for production, it would probably look less dramatic than what the teaser image suggests, what with its exaggerated rump, oversized wheels and aggressive diffuser.
Mercedes-AMG is likely to stick with the same powertrain it has given the existing GT coupe, which means it will be endowed with the 585hp 4.0-litre biturbocharged V8 engine coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
It would also be interesting to see if the car, rumoured to be called the GT4 and slated for a 2018 release, would retain the sleek cameras that replace the wing mirrors as shown in the concept.
Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen has officially started the production of the GT cars.
The new models - GT R, GT Roadster and GT C Roadster - will be launched in spring 2017.
