BERLIN: The next generation of Mercedes' legendary SL roadster is set to be formally unveiled in the coming weeks before its launch in the first half of 2022, technical director Jochen Hermann announced during tests around the Nuerburgring track in Germany.

The automotive bodybuilders at Mercedes' AMG workshop are not taking their cue from the previous GT, but have taken a new direction with the SL, Hermann says.

At just under 5 metres in length, they've created space for two second-row seats for the first time since the R 129. They are also returning to the fabric soft top, according to Hermann.

And unlike in the AMG GT, the nine-speed automatic transmission is once again mated directly to the engine.

New, on the other hand, is the rear-axle steering for better handling as well as all-wheel drive for more traction.

There's also a completely new interior. Similar to the current S-Class, it is based on large screens and largely digital controls.

To avoid distracting reflections, however, the SL has a hood around the cockpit displays and the central display is a free-standing element in front of the centre console and can be tilted at the touch of a button.

The engines, on the other hand, are familiar from other AMG models. Hermann is not giving any concrete details, but in company circles there's talk of the familiar six- and eight-cylinder, three and four-litre engines with around 400hp to 650hp.

In addition, a plug-in hybrid, as just presented in the four-door GT, is considered likely. Hermann also does not want to rule out a fully electric version.

The V12, on the other hand, which recently crowned the SL as a luxury roadster, definitely no longer has a chance. It neither fits with the times nor the rediscovered sportiness of the SL, Hermann says.
