Mercedes-Benz joins skateboard label to promote tricked-out AMGs

BERLIN: Mercedes-Benz and a stylish skateboard label might seem like strange bedfellows, but the two firms have teamed up to promote streetwear and a set of four fancy AMG sports cars.

The cars are inspired by the cities of London, Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo where British skateboard maker Palace has its flagship stores.

It seems the three-pointed-star wants to mine the street credibility of the skateboard scene although only a handful of skaters will ever be able to afford an AMG which are the most expensive and sporty models in the Mercedes range.

The canvas for one of the arty cars, a Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4MATIC, costs a cool €187,097 (RM870,000) to buy in standard trim. The tricked-out version carries no official price tag.

The special AMGs are the second collaboration with the skate label which teamed up with Mercedes-Benz for a presentation as part of last year's Nürburgring 24-Hour race. A GT3 racing car with Palace-designed vehicle livery is lined up for the start.

All four AMG art cars are one-offs with a seven-layer fade paint finish, incorporating colour-changing effects.

The Mercedes AMG G 63 AMG "Space Horse Tokyo" is painted with a horse galloping on the vehicle's flank as a tribute to the fantasy culture so popular in Japan.

Meanwhile "Tiger London" sports a large head of a white tiger on the bonnet in homage "to the vibrant and diverse custom car scene in the UK in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s."

The cars also promote a collection of trousers, hoodies, jackets and caps with the Palace touch which are said to be "stylistically oriented towards a 'motor mechanic' look."
