Mercedes-Benz to carry out L3 autonomous driving tests in Beijing

SHANGHAI: Mercedes-Benz said on Monday it would carry out level 3 autonomous driving tests on designated highways in Beijing, without giving an exact time frame.

The German automaker said it was one of the first batch of companies approved by the Beijing municipal government on Saturday to run such tests as the regulator accelerates the mass adoption of highly autonomous driving technologies.

Mercedes has been testing its L3 autonomous driving system in closed areas in China since 2021, the company added.

BMW announced last week it had been approved for L3 trials on high-speed roads in Shanghai.

BMW will launch products equipped with L3 self-driving functionality when they can do so in accordance with Chinese laws and regulations, it said in a statement.

China's IM Motors is applying to be part of the L3 trials as well.
