STUTTGART: In its most successful August in its 100-year-plus history, German premium carmaker Mercedes Benz sold a remarkable 156,246 cars worldwide.

And while demand is up for all luxury automotive marques - BMW is halfway through its most successful year of all time - it's SUVs that are leading the charge.

"SUVs once again contributed significantly to the best-ever unit sales by Mercedes-Benz this August," Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. "Mercedes-Benz has already delivered more than four million SUVs to customers worldwide. Their popularity is rising year on year."

Of the 156,246 cars sold over the past month, 56,286 - that's just over one in three - were of the SUV variety.

Mercedes is planning an even bigger push into the SUV market over the coming months and is tipped to unveil a plug-in electric SUV to challenge the Tesla Model X at the Paris Motor show in October.
