Mercedes Vision EQXX concept targets world's longest electric range at 1,200km

FRANKFURT: One day, no one will bat an eyelid if an electric car can go 2,000km on a single charge. But for now any auto maker that can validate its electric car can travel 1,000km is reason for keen interest.

Daimler said last week it's working on just one such car with a claimed 1,207km of range. That's about the distance from Beijing to Shanghai.

Daimler told investors at a virtual strategy update that Mercedes engineers are working on a Vision EQXX concept whose avowed goal is to stretch the range to beyond 1,200km. No timeline was disclosed as to when the concept car would be revealed.

However, the next-generation technologies learnt from the Vision EQXX programme would be adapted for use in future series electric vehicles.

The exceptional range would be based on not just advanced battery tech but also efficiency gains, said Daimler.

Mercedes-Benz F1 HPP group in the UK has also been roped in to work on Vision EQXX because of their deep knowledge in electric motors and motorsports.

At present, the Lucid Air sedan has the longest electric range at 800km. It is followed by Tesla Model S at 610km and Tesla Model 3 at 560km.
