MG Linghang uses Luran S polymer for glossy look and high weathering performance

SHANGHAI: Chinese automaker SAIC will use the polymer Luran S from INEOS Styrolution for its new MG Linghang model.

Luran S or known chemically as acrylonitrile styrene acrylate copolymer, is a material that is applied to unpainted exterior applications. It offers outstanding properties for long-term use and for a high quality surface appearance such as the grill, mirror housings and overhead compartments in a car's cabin.

In particular, it offers weathering stability for outdoor applications even when unpainted. It is also an ideal material for hot stamping technology that allows for aesthetic effects.

Frankfurt-based INEOS Styrolution, a business unit of Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS Group, said SAIC chose the product because of its enhanced UV resistance, weatherability and lasting premium paint-free, high gloss appearance with mold-in deep dark colour.

Prior to its facelift, the Linghang was known as the HS. Linghang means "pilot" in Chinese. It's about the size of a Proton X70. The front-end has been reworked to look more like a Maserati but with enough differences not to trigger a lawsuit.

Petrol engine options remain the same as in the pre-facelift line-up. There are 1.5L turbo making 171hp  and a 2.0L turbo serving up 228hp. A plug-in hybrid using the 1.5L turbo mill is also available.

The Linghang was launched in September last year at the Beijing Auto Show.
