Ministry to query TnG on its new Visa card’s inability to handle toll payments
By THE STAR | 19 January 2023
PETALING JAYA: Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub tweeted that Touch 'n Go would be asked to provide an explanation about its new prepaid Visa card tomorrow morning.
"I have received a lot of complaints regarding this matter and I have informed the Enforcement Division to look into this issue seriously,” he said in a tweet today.
Salahuddin’s tweet was accompanied by The Star’s report, “Touch ‘n Go unveils Visa card tied to ewallet, but it can’t be used to pay for tolls”.
At the launch yesterday, the company said that the card can’t be used for toll payments as it was unable to integrate both Visa Paywave and its NFC features due to interference issues discovered during the early development phase.
Most people on social media have been critical, saying that it is inconvenient to have to carry two cards in order to use its ewallet.
The Visa prepaid card, tied to the company’s ewallet, allows users to make online and offline payments both locally and internationally.
According to TnG, the card acts as a complementary payment channel to its ewallet, allowing users to make payments even if the merchant doesn’t have a DuitNow QR code.
The card also allows users to withdraw cash at automated teller machines (ATMs) with the Visa Plus logo.
