KLANG: During the extended weekend in conjunction with the 69th National Day and school holidays, West Coast Expressway (WCE) expects more than 150,000 vehicles daily to travel across its operational sections.
WCE therefore advises highway users to plan their journeys in advance and, where possible, avoid travelling during peak periods, particularly from late afternoon into the evening.
“We expect more than 150,000 vehicles daily to use WCE throughout the Merdeka and school holiday period. This increase is consistent with travel patterns typically experienced during extended weekends and school holidays, particularly for journeys between the Klang Valley, Selangor and Perak,” said WCE head of highway operations Syed Muhd Naguib.
"Our priority is to ensure the safety of every highway user. Plan your journey, get sufficient rest and never compromise safety simply to save a few minutes of travelling time.”
Throughout the holiday period, WCE will step up its operational readiness across its open sections, including 24-hour highway patrol and Emergency Response Team (ERT) coverage, complemented by continuous traffic monitoring.
Highway users are encouraged to use the ‘WCE App’ for journey planning, route navigation and real-time traffic information, including access to live CCTV views along the expressway.
Highway users are also advised to:
- Ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on long-distance journeys;
- Ensure sufficient Touch ’n Go card or eWallet balance before entering the expressway;
- Observe speed limits and wear seat belts at all times;
- Get sufficient rest and stop at lay-bys near toll plazas or Rest and Service Areas (R&Rs) available along WCE if experiencing fatigue or signs of microsleep;
- Never use the emergency lane except in an emergency;
- Motorcyclists are encouraged to use the designated motorcycle shelters provided along the expressway to rest when tired or seek shelter during rain;
- Exercise patience, consideration and responsible driving, particularly during periods of heavier traffic.
WCE also reminds motorcyclists to remain cautious and vigilant, particularly when traffic volumes increase.
The emergency lane is not an exclusive lane for motorcyclists.
Instead, it is reserved for emergencies, rescue operations, incident management and unforeseen situations requiring immediate access to ensure the safety of all highway users and maintain the smooth flow of traffic.
