BEIJING: A motorist has been fined in central China after he tried to pass off his Chinese-made car as a luxury Porsche, a news website reported.

The man was stopped at a routine spot check in Liuyang in Hunan province on Tuesday, Thepaper.cn reported.

His car was plastered with Porsche badges and emblems, but police found it was in fact a Chinese Zotye SR9 model, according to the article.

The driver, whose full name was not given, was fined 500 yuan (RM320) for modifying the car so that it did not match its registration details.



The report said an SR9 costs about 100,000 yuan in China, while a Porsche Macan starts selling for over five times that amount.

The motorist was quoted as saying that he bought the badges and stickers to make his car look like a Porsche for about 200 yuan.

A German car website reported two years ago that Porsche was considering suing Zoyte because another of its vehicles the T700 looked similar to the German manufacturer’s Macan model.

Jaguar Land Rover is suing another Chinese carmaker Jiangling Motors after alleging that it copied its Rover Evoque model, the Reuters news agency reported last year, citing an unnamed person familiar with the matter. — South China Morning Post
