MUNICH: BMW tuner Alpina has revealed the first details of the planned new D5 S model, noting that it will reach speeds of up to 286kph.

The D5 S, based on the 5 Series, will be available as both a sedan from US$103,730, and as an estate car, which will only be 3 kph slower, at a starting price of US$106,680. The car is expected to be the fastest diesel production model in the world.

The heart of the D5 S is a new 3.0-litre V6, which delivers 388hp, making for a sprint from 0 to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds for the sedan and 4.6 seconds for the estate car. In terms of fuel consumption, the manufacturer has given figures of 6.6 litres per 100km for the sedan and 6.9 litres for the estate.

Among other changes, the model will feature a newly developed sports suspension and rear-skewed all-wheel drive, as well as forged 20-inch rims. Additional details from Alpina will follow in early September.
