MyDigital ID needed for JPJ mobile app from Oct 10
By THE STAR | 02 October 2024UPDATE: No need for MyDigital ID from Oct 10
PETALING JAYA: Malaysians will need a MyDigital ID to log into the Road Transport Department's mobile app starting from Oct 10.
In a message on the MyJPJ app, it said the single sign-on using the MyDigital ID would be implemented starting Oct 10.
"Please register on the MyDigital ID application to avoid any sign-in difficulty," it said.
First announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in November last year, MyDigital ID is recognised nationally as a trusted form of digital identification management.
It is designed to provide secure authentication for online transactions and address vulnerabilities present in the existing online identity verification system.
Since then, MyDigital ID registration kiosks have been placed at 200 NRD branches, eight National Information Dissemination Centre branches and 357 Tealive outlets throughout the country and to date over 600,000 Malaysians have registered with MyDigital ID.
People can renew their driving licence and motor vehicle licence or road tax renewals via the MyJPJ mobile app.
However, some Malaysians said they found MyDigital ID hard to use.
Facebook user Wu Kwung questioned the need for installing and registering for MyDigital ID.
"Why can't the relevant authorities give some leeway or (make it) optional for senior citizens. Because this age group aren't tech savvy and easily fall into scams," he wrote.
Another user, Nik San concurred with Wu, adding that this requirement would be difficult for many, especially senior citizens.
"Why make things difficult for people (especially senior citizens)? So what will happen at roadblocks if we did not register for MyDigital ID and can't log into MyJPJ?" he commented.
Another Facebook user Tantty Ali expressed disappointment, saying that she does not have confidence that MyDigital ID would be safe.
"We have a track record of being tech illiterate and cybersecurity is just horrible (sic)," she wrote.
Meanwhile, user David Cheng Kok Meng added that he was having trouble trying to register his MyDigital ID as the app was laggy.
The MyJPJ app, which was released at the end of 2022, has been downloaded from the Google Play store over 5 million times.
The app can be used to view and renew driver’s licences and road tax. An update earlier in August also added the ability to view vehicle ownership certificates within the app as well.
