PRAGUE: With car shows on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic, Skoda has chosen to unveil its fourth-generation Fabia at a virtual event on Tuesday.

The showcase was streamed online through the Czech brand's social media YouTube and Facebook channels, with the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art here serving as a virtual backdrop.

The new car is the first Fabia to be based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB-A0 platform that is also used for the current SEAT Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo. Skoda has promised the Fabia will be larger and "more expressive".

An interior design sketch showed a more airy cabin which is basically a scaled-down version of that found in the larger Octavia, with a free-standing central infotainment touchscreen and prominent circular air vents.

During April, Skoda has been teasing the car which has undergone a major design overhaul to bring it into line with Skoda's latest design language.

The front grille has grown in size and sharp LED lights feature at both ends. A larger rear spoiler, sleeker wing mirrors and active air inlets at the front round off the visual package.

Skoda said new Fabia is 111 mm longer and 48 mm wider than the previous model which makes for increased cabin space while boot space has also gone up by 50 litres too.

The Fabia gets petrol engines from the Volkswagen Group, with most cars using variants of the turbocharged three-cylinder TSI unit. Britain's Autocar magazine said Skoda was not planning an electric version for the time in order to peg development costs.
