New Camry gets 5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating

SHAH ALAM: UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), the distributor of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia has announced that its newly launched Toyota Camry has been awarded a five-star rating from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations New Car Assessment Programme (ASEAN NCAP) crash test result.

The eighth-generation Camry, which debuted in November last year, received 49.04 points for the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 22.68 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP) and 19.75 point for Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) assessments.

With the Camry scoring in all aspects including effective breaking avoidance, seat belt reminders, blind spot technology and advance safety assist technologies, it managed to receive a five five-Star rating with an overall score of 91.47 points.

The new Camry is available as a 2.5V variant and features the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assist technologies.

This includes Pre-collision System, Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) and Automatic High Beam (AHB).



All that gets housed within the Japanese carmaker's Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, which has helped to improve responsiveness, handling and overall rigidity.

The announcement was made during the launch of the 2019 ASEAN NCAP Labelling
Compliance Guideline for Malaysia by Minister of Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail.

The compliance guideline mentions that it will be mandatory for manufacturers to display the ASEAN NCAP rating of new vehicles on sale from Mar 1, 2020 onwards to ensure that consumers are properly informed.
