New electrified BMW 1 Series unveiled


MUNICH: BMW has unveiled the new 1 Series, which will officially launch in October 2024.

With a focus on sporty performance and sustainability, it features efficient engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and is produced using processes designed to conserve resources and recycle materials.

The model reflects a progressive character with a redesigned interior, expanded automated driving and parking systems, and the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, based on BMW Operating System 9.

The BMW 1 Series will be produced at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig.

Germany is the primary market, with significant sales also expected in other European countries and Japan.

Exterior

The 1 Series maintains typical BMW proportions, including a long bonnet, passenger cell set back, dynamic roofline, and powerful rear end.

It has slightly increased dimensions compared to its predecessor, with an exterior length of 4,361 mm, wheelbase of 2,670 mm, width of 1,800 mm, and height of 1,459 mm.

The front end is lower, and the radiator grille features vertical and diagonal bars.

Standard LED headlights and optional adaptive LED headlights are included.

The body paintwork is available in two solid and seven metallic finishes, with additional BMW Individual paint finishes. A high-gloss black roof paint finish is also available for the first time.

The M Sport Package enhances the BMW 1 Series' dynamic appearance with large air intakes, side skirts, and a rear diffuser element.

The M135 xDrive, the top model, features a 221 kW/300 hp engine, Adaptive M Chassis, sport steering, and all-wheel drive, accelerating from 0 to 100kph in 4.9 seconds. It includes an M Technology Package with suspension components, lightweight measures, and 19-inch forged wheels.

Interior

The leather-free interior offers a modern, premium ambience with space for five occupants. Newly designed seats, including sport seats and M sport seats, are available with various materials and adjustments.

Heated seats, electric adjustments, lumbar support, and optional massage function are offered. The storage space can be increased from 380 litres to 1,200 litres by folding down the rear seat backrests.

The interior features high-quality surfaces, a redesigned gear selector, and the BMW Curved Display, comprising a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display.

The cockpit has reduced buttons and controls, with digital air conditioning control.

Engines and performance

The new 1 Series includes the latest generation of modular engines from BMW.

The 120 features a three-cylinder petrol engine, while the 120d has a four-cylinder diesel engine, both with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and a 7-speed Steptronic transmission.

The 120 offers 125 kW/170 hp, accelerating from 0 to 100kph in 7.8 seconds.

The 120d provides 120 kW/163 hp, achieving the same acceleration in 7.9 seconds. The 118d, with a four-cylinder diesel engine, delivers 110 kW/150 hp and accelerates in 8.3 seconds.

The vehicle benefits from increased body rigidity and advanced chassis technology, including optimised kinematics and new shock absorber technology.

Standard features include directly controlled wheel slip limitation, an integrated braking system, and 17-inch light-alloy wheels.

The optional M Sport Package includes the Adaptive M Chassis, sport steering, and 18-inch wheels.

Automated driving and parking systems

The  1 Series offers an extended range of automated driving and parking systems.

Standard features include Driving Assistant with front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning, Exit Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant.

Optional features include Steering and Lane Control Assist, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, and route guidance with Active Cruise Control. Parking Assistant Professional allows smartphone-controlled parking.

Standard and optional equipment

Standard equipment includes automatic air conditioning, an alarm system, electrically folding mirrors, and BMW Live Cockpit Plus with cloud-based navigation.

Optional packages include the Innovation Package with BMW Live Cockpit Professional and Parking Assistant Plus, and the Premium Package with wireless charging, Comfort Access, and adaptive LED headlights.

Other options include 2-zone air conditioning, a panoramic glass roof, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

BMW iDrive and digital services

The 1 Series features BMW iDrive with QuickSelect for intuitive operation, based on BMW Operating System 9.

Remote software upgrades allow over-the-air updates, and BMW Digital Premium offers apps, music and video streaming, and data usage.

Smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard.

The BMW Digital Key Plus is available for compatible devices via the My BMW App.
