New Honda Civic Type R sets new lap record at Suzuka

TOKYO: Honda today announced the all-new Civic Type R has set a new lap time record for a front-wheel drive car at the Suzuka circuit.

The final development car prior to the production model lapped the 5.8-km long circuit in 2 minutes 23.120 seconds, nearly 1 second less than the 2021 Civic Type R Limited Edition.

It may not seem much but in the world of high level performance every second shaved is a win. At the time, the previous Type R featured the ultimate level of lightweight and special equipment.

More power is expected from an improved 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a car packing a manual transmission. Note that the engine of the outgoing Civic Type R was able to make 316hp in Japan and Europe because of higher octane fuel but loses 10hp in markets everywhere else.

The all-new Civic Type R, expected to be Honda's last combustion engine-only car, is scheduled to make its debut in summer 2022. It will have to contend with the Toyota GR Corolla and VW Golf R, as well as the soon-to-launch new BMW M2 and Nissan Z.
