New kit turns one of the most famed roadsters into a punchy electric car

LONDON: The Mazda Miata MX-5 is one of the most popular roadster in history and thanks to English firm Electrogenic it can now be converted into a nippy electric with zero tailpipe emissions.

The latest "plug and play" kit from the company suits the Mk 1 version of the Japanese soft-top and follows on from similar packages made for the Jaguar E Type, Delorean DMC-12, Porsche 911 and the classic Mini.

The electrified mini tops the scales at just 100kg more than the original ICE car at around 1,100 kg. OEM batteries rated at 42kWh fit under the bonnet in the space normally occupied by the 1.8-litre in-line four cylinder petrol engine.

Weight-distribution also remains the same, which assures good handling while the power-to-weight ratio is enhanced by 21%. The Mazda kit is offered globally through a network of partner workshops vetted by Electrogenic.

The EV package has been designed to be straightforward to install and can be fitted by a trained mechanic in just a few days, said the firm. To create the package, an MX-5 was 3D scanned, with the battery assembly precisely tailored accordingly.

"We've been long intrigued by the concept of a light, well-balanced, rear-wheel-drive electrified modern classic", said chief executive Steve Drummond. "It seems were weren't alone. as we've received a great deal of interest in the idea of an MX-5 conversion over the years."

The converted MX-5 offers around 240km of range in real world driving condition and the batteries can be replenished by a fast charger in a hour. Prices for the kit have not yet been announced.
