New Mercedes G-Class shows up
By CARSIFU | 27 March 2024STUTTGART /GRAZ: Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the latest iteration of its iconic G-Class series.
The G-Class, a symbol of luxury off-road capability since its inception in 1979, has been refreshed to enhance its iconic status further.
The latest iteration boasts electrified engines for superior performance on and off the road, underlining the brand's commitment to modernising while preserving the G-Class's legendary off-road prowess.
With a starting price of 122,808 euros (RM628,000), the all-new G-Class offers an unprecedented array of drive portfolios and customisation options, allowing owners to tailor their vehicles to their preferences.
Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz Group AG's chief technology officer, emphasised the model's evolution, noting the combination of the electrified drive portfolio, the pioneering MBUX infotainment system, and improved comfort and off-road functionalities.
These enhancements aim to cement the G-Class's reputation as the premier luxury off-roader, dubbed THE Geländewagen, blending top-tier driving experiences with the latest digital conveniences.
Central to the G-Class's enduring appeal are its foundational off-road features, including a ladder-frame design, three mechanical differential locks, Low Range gear reduction, a solid rear axle, and an independent front suspension.
This setup enables the vehicle to tackle the most challenging terrains, underscored by impressive specifications such as a 100% gradeability on appropriate surfaces, a minimum ground clearance of 241 mm, and a fording depth of up to 70 cm.
The Offroad Cockpit, a new addition, offers drivers a comprehensive overview of essential off-road driving data, enhancing the vehicle's utility in rugged conditions.
A notable feature of the new model is the "Transparent Hood" function, offering drivers a virtual view beneath the vehicle's front end, a boon for navigating off-road terrain.
Beyond its off-road capabilities, the G-Class stands out for its versatility, with models like the Mercedes-AMG performance variant, the G 450 d, and the G 500, all benefiting from electrification through 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. This advancement promises increased efficiency and reduced fuel consumption, with an all-electric model slated for future release.
While the G-Class has retained its distinctive aesthetic for over four decades, the latest models introduce subtle yet effective design tweaks.
Changes include a redesigned radiator grille with four horizontal louvres and updated front and rear bumpers. Aerodynamics and acoustic comfort have been improved through new A-pillar cladding and a spoiler lip on the roof edge.
Inside, the G-Class marries luxury with functionality, incorporating the advanced MBUX infotainment system for a more digitalised user experience.
Options such as Keyless-Go, temperature-controlled cupholders, and the Burmester 3D surround sound system enhance comfort, while expanded Manufaktur options allow for extensive personalization of both the interior and exterior, ensuring that the G-Class remains a customizable, technologically advanced icon of off-road luxury.
